Causes of Depression During Pregnancy

1History of Depression

This is one of the major reasons for depression. If you have a personal or family history of depression or anxiety, then the chances of depression in pregnancy are higher for you. Although you have never reached a “critical” stage of depression, yet in pregnancy, you tend to become more anxious.

2Family Disturbance

An upset marital relationship, where you are facing difficulties in dealing with your partner, also leads to depression in pregnancy. You need to check, if that conflict is because of your upcoming baby, then it is better to resolve that before delivery.

If you or your partner is not expecting a baby, then you must not proceed because this is going to add even more pressure/problems.

3Fertility Issues

If you have problems getting pregnant, you are likely to be under high stress. I have seen many cases, where women have to pass through multiple tests and procedures to get pregnant. They get frustrated and depressed. Even after conceiving, they are always under fear of losing the baby.

4Previous Pregnancy Losses

Another reason behind depression during pregnancy is previous pregnancy losses. If you have a history of miscarriages, then every time you conceive, you will be surrounded with the fear of losing your baby. For a mother, recovering from the last unfortunate episode of miscarriage is not an easy thing.

5Life Tragedies

We are in a materialistic world and we have to deal with several economical, emotional and physical worries like job change, relocation, workplace change, financial troubles, the death of a friend/relatives, job loss, and etc. These all can aggravate your mental state, hence depression.

6History of Abuse

Women who are victims of emotional, sexual, physical or verbal abuse may experience low self-esteem, a sense of helplessness, or feelings of isolation. These all state of mind contribute to depression.
