Expecting mothers always ask us a lot of questions about caffeine consumption during pregnancy. Undoubtedly, there are several myths, as well. So, in this article, I will try to share my expert’s view on these.

Out of many questions, I have selected following and would like to address these.
  1. Do I have to give up caffeine while I’m pregnant?
  2. Is it dangerous to consume slightly higher doses of caffeine during pregnancy?
  3. In fact, what makes my body caffeine?
  4. In what foods or drinks is caffeine found?
  5. I would like to quit the caffeine. Is there any easy method?

1Do I have to give up caffeine while I’m pregnant?

Not necessarily. As long as you do not exaggerate, you can enjoy a cup of caffeine. Most studies show that a moderate amount of caffeine does not have a negative effect on the mother or fetus during pregnancy.

What does a moderate amount mean? About 300mg caffeine is considered as the moderate amount. More than that, it’s questionable. And even though the studies mentioned above do not say that 300mg or less could harm your mother or baby, most women almost give up caffeine at the doctor’s urgency.

2Is it dangerous to consume slightly higher doses of caffeine during pregnancy?

It is not known for sure. The researches undertaken are unsystematic and not very conclusive about what can happen if you drink more than 3-4 cups of coffee a day. So, there are no hard and fast recommendations. Some studies relate high consumption of caffeine with spontaneous abortion, low birth weight and birth defects.

The vast majority of researchers say that high coffee consumption increases the risk of having a low birth weight baby.

3In fact, what makes my body caffeine?

First of all, regardless of the form, drinkable or eatable, caffeine has no nutritional intake. Absolutely no vitamin or mineral. Caffeine increases cardiac rhythm and metabolism, which stresses the developing baby. But as timeless stress is not healthy, small amounts of stress, as the fetus feels after drinking a cup of coffee, does not harm them.

All those who drink coffee regularly know they are addicted and that a large amount causes insomnia, nervousness, and headaches. Coffee is a diuretic, which leads to the elimination of water and other fluids, as well as calcium, all the things you need for a healthy pregnancy. Caffeine also reduces the body’s ability to absorb iron.

4In what foods or drinks is caffeine found?

Chocolate, some medicines, and  teas contain caffeine. In coffee or tea, the amount of caffeine varies greatly, from 30 to 150mg per cup, as coffee or tea leaves are boiled at different temperatures. The drinks like coca-cola also contain varying amounts of caffeine.

5I would like to quit the caffeine, do not risk anything. Do you know any method?

Many women find that the pleasure of a cup of coffee disappears in the first trimester when the feeling of nausea develops.

In other words, you can reduce the intake of caffeine in your hot drinks by boiling them for a shorter time. If you really want to have a cup of warm tea, leaving the tea bag in boiled water for just one minute instead of 5, reduce caffeine in half. There are many decaffeinated teas (black or green) on the market.

If you are a fan of cola or cola drinks, it will not be easy to quit. To minimize the symptoms (headaches, fatigue, apathy), gradually reduce the amount of caffeine. At the beginning, try with reducing the quantity to half. You can also try to replace the filter coffee with the instant coffee.

Do You Have Any Question? Speak To Our Expert

If a cup of coffee is an emotional need, replace it with decaffeinated coffee or tea. If you are looking for a cool ice cola, drink variants without caffeine or, better yet, a glass of mineral water with a bit of lemon.

Generally, herbal teas do not contain caffeine, but it is best to read the ingredients list and talk to your doctor before trying a new one because some may be contraindicated in pregnancy.
