My baby is 18 months and has many tantrums a day where head butting everything in sight causes him a lot of injuries. He has it when not being able to reach something (unsuitable) or when he finishes the milk in his bottle or the simplest thing like walking or being held. I try cuddling or distracting, talking to him simply by saying ‘no you don’t do that’ however no change. He stops only when he’s exhausted and meanwhile I have to hold him so he’s not doing head damage but then I cop it.
Help what can I do?
Headbanging is very common – This is the only way that your kid knows for releasing stress. So, you must try to figure out some alternatives; give him a stress-buster.
Try to find out the exact reasons – It might not be what you think. For you, it is finishing bottle. But for him, it could be hunger, tasteless milk, or something else. Do not just assume things, but try to find out what is really bothering him.
Don’t lecture or try to reason with him – You must learn that he is not ready to listen to you. So, you should not try that. Instead, let him cry in a safe environment.
Pretend like you are ignoring – Give your child your attention, but not when he’s banging. I hope you understand, what I am talking about. He is doing this to have your attention. But, in the end, giving him an ear must be your decision.
Create safety – Do what you can to protect your child from any head injury.
Do not worry – Your baby knows his threshold for pain. So, he is not going to hit himself hard.
See a doctor – When you see things getting out of control, see an expert. You may need a child-behavior expert.
