In the series of baby growth, today, I will be talking about the health and development of 7 month’s baby.

In this month, you have to prepare yourself for a few more sleepless nights for reasons like baby’s teething or unpleasant food reactions (if any) due to food diversification. A 7 month’s baby will show his understanding about faces, voice tones and objects. Let us learn more about health and development of 7 month’s baby.

1Physical development

At seven months, your baby is going to become more powerful, active and going to acquired a lot of new skills. By this age, he will be able to stand on his own.

It is a time when he will be able to manage to bend for toys, crawls, making rapid strides in the development of walking and first steps. However, it is important to encourage your baby to stand up and help him having his first few steps.

Generally, the first tooth may start to occur at the age of three months. However, for most babies, the right for the eruption of first teeth is between 4 and 7 months and is placed in the middle of the lower gum.

No need to worry if your baby teeth are not properly aligned and have spaces between them. These spaces begin to diminish and even disappear by the age of three years old, once your baby have all 20 teeth.

Before the advent of your baby’s first teeth, you need to prepare yourself for some more sleepless nights. You must deal this period with patience because even your baby is suffering from immense pain. In such a case, you can always reduce the pain caused by teething by giving him something to chew, to relax his gums.

Taking about the height and weight, according to WHO, at the age of 7 months, an average weight of boy weighs between 6.7 – 10.2 kg, while a girl will record slightly less, between 6.1 – 9.6 kg.

According to WHO, a boy of 7 months will measure around 65.1 – 73.2 cm, while the height of girls the same age will be between 62.9 – 71.6 cm.

2Sleep

If your baby is not suffering from any ailment, at seven months, he should sleep all night without interruption. According to experts, babies sleep 10-11 hours per night. In addition, if your child is able to take two sessions of sleep (2-3 hours each) in the afternoon, then it will be very good.

The sleeping position of the child must be – on his back. This sleeping position can prevent the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

3Communication

Gradually, the baby begins to understand the significance of language. Although your baby is not able to follow instructions, yet he can understand when we say “no” or “not allowed.”

In the seventh month, your baby begins to associate with names. You may find that when you call your baby by his name, he stares at you or if you are not nearby, he will start looking for you.

Your baby’s face is one that “speaks” the most and send a lot of valuable information with which you can understand a lot about his needs in a better and easier way. Also, your baby can understand your mood by your tone of voice and facial expression.

It is important to encourage the child to talk. To do so, you need to communicate constantly with him, you can read him story books and stimulate him to answer your questions or requests.

In the seventh month, your baby knows how to interact with objects and your baby can even sort objects of the same type. For example, toy cars of different sizes – if you give him both small and big cars, you will see how he separates big cars from small cars.

“In this month, my daughter used to see mirror a lot. And, on appearing on the mirror from her back, I remember, how she used to turn her head towards me to convince me that she is seeing me in the mirror.”

4Food Diversification

Seventh months is the period when you can start with food diversification for sure. In this month you can introduce foods with a different texture, more consistent than purée.

After introducing a new food, wait for at least one to two days before you introduce another one. You need this much gap to see how your baby reacts to that food and to see if there are any unfortunate allergic reactions like swelling of the lips and face, rash, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.

Despite food diversification, you should not stop breastfeeding because even at this age, breast milk remains an important part of nutrition. Your child must have the recommended daily amount; 400-600 ml milk.

Again, you must not overlook the importance of seeking advice from a pediatrician before food diversification. Every kid is different and so are their diet charts; they vary depending on many factors like age, prematurity, health, weight, etc.

5Tips for Parents

This anxiety is a sign that your baby is growing and he is not understanding what is happening around him. Unlike previous months, in the seventh month, your baby will be able to realize your absence, and thus, crying for your presence is natural. This is going to be a delight for first few days, but frustrating afterward. So, you need to handle this with patience. To make him bear the separation, you need to make him sure that you are returning back because, for him, you are the world. Before you leave him, overwhelm him with a few hugs and kisses.

Allow other family members to play with your baby. You need to very careful about what you want now! If you want your baby to completely depend on you, then you must not expect him to do his things of his own at a later stage or feeling safe with another family person.

At this age, some babies are shy and less friendly. It does not mean that they are afraid. This is a sign that the baby now can differentiate between close persons and strangers.
Do not force your child to stay with a stranger, if he shows any sign of displeasure.

As your baby is more mobile now, keep all drugs or poisonous substances away from his reach.

Also, do not forget about the required vaccination.
